Foloi Forest and Centaurs Gorge: choosing your walk

An oak-covered plateau and a narrow green gorge offer two different outings in the western Peloponnese. Find the right amount of walking for your visit.

A visit among the oaks or a hike through a narrow gorge? Foloi offers both kinds of outing, but they call for different plans. The forest occupies an upland plateau in Ilia, in the western Peloponnese. Just outside the oak woodland, Centaurs Gorge brings you into a confined passage, with tall sides and plants growing along its walls.

The contrast gives this corner of Greece its appeal. A forest visit lets you concentrate on the trees and the wider landscape; a gorge hike makes the walk itself the main event. Decide which experience you want before filling the rest of your day with stops.

An oak forest with a story attached

Foloi belongs to the Municipality of Ancient Olympia. The forest lies within the catchment areas of the Erymanthos and Pineios rivers, and its large oaks give it a distinctive character. It is a different reason to visit this part of the Peloponnese from the archaeological sites and coastal scenery often associated with a Greek holiday.

In Greek mythology, the name is linked to Pholos, a centaur and friend of Herakles. The story belongs to this landscape: both the forest's name and the neighbouring gorge keep the centaur association alive. The Olympia destination guide and the Region of Western Greece's location guide provide the geographical background and explain the mythological connection.

A forest visit is a different commitment from a gorge hike

If your priority is to see the oaks and keep the day flexible, plan a visit to the woodland separately from a full hiking route. The local destination guide describes access to the area by car. That is not a promise of vehicle access into the gorge, or a guarantee that every forest track suits an ordinary hire car.

Centaurs Gorge has a narrow path and high, green sides. If that is the landscape you want to experience, give the walk the largest part of your day rather than fitting it between several fixed appointments.

The UA guided hike at Foloi and Centaurs Gorge is a moderate hike covering approximately 8.5 kilometres, with a stated programme duration of 3–4 hours. Those figures describe this particular experience, not every route in the forest. Allow separately for your journey to the meeting place and your return: the programme duration is not a round trip from your accommodation.

What the guided programme includes

The experience includes leaders certified in first aid and liability insurance. Greek and English are the listed languages, and the minimum participation age is eight. That age limit belongs to this programme; it does not, by itself, establish whether the walk suits a particular child.

Transport to Foloi is not listed among the inclusions. The meeting location is described broadly as “Foloi Oak Forest”, so you need the precise meeting point and start time for your booking before planning the journey. A forest name alone is not a useful arrival address for a timed activity.

Your own kit includes a backpack, water —the programme specifies at least one litre—, snacks, hiking footwear and clothing suited to the weather. In winter, a second pair of shoes is recommended because footwear may get wet. Water and snacks are items to bring, rather than listed refreshments supplied during the walk.

Give the walk room in your itinerary

The experience is described as operating from January to December. That is a seasonal range, not confirmation of a departure on every date or of unchanged conditions in the gorge. Weather can affect whether an individual outing goes ahead.

A 3–4-hour hike makes a substantial main activity for a day devoted to Foloi. If someone in your group wants a shorter commitment, visiting the oak woodland is a different plan worth considering. Choose the landscape and amount of walking that appeal to you, then build the rest of the day around that choice.
