Aegina and Cape Sounion both let you leave Athens for the day without driving, but they work in different ways. At Aegina's main port, you step off the ferry into the town where you can spend your day. At Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon is the focus, and your transport arrangements determine how long you can stay. Choose around what you want to do when you arrive, then work through the journey back.
Aegina: keep the day around the main port
Aegina Town is a practical choice if you want a change of scene with relatively little onward travel. The waterfront and market streets lend themselves to a day divided between walking, a meal and unhurried stops. Aphaias Street runs parallel to the coastal road, while the neoclassical buildings reflect the island's place in the early years of the modern Greek state.
Check that your ferry destination is Aegina's main port. Arriving at another port changes the plan if your intention is to walk around the town. The operator's Piraeus–Aegina timetable is a useful place to establish outbound and return sailings for your chosen date. Different vessels do not necessarily take the same time, so compare the actual services rather than treating the crossing as one fixed duration.
A compact plan works well here: walk along the waterfront, turn into the market streets and leave time for lunch. Aegina's pistachios have Protected Designation of Origin status and offer a local flavour to explore along the way. You can enjoy that small part of the island without trying to collect every major sight in a single outing.
The Temple of Aphaia, Agios Nektarios and Perdika require separate transport planning. A car-free trip does not make the whole island walkable. If one of these places is your main reason for visiting, establish the local connection and the journey back to the right port before committing to your ferry times. Aegina Town and a wider island itinerary are different plans.
Cape Sounion: make the temple your main stop
At Sounion, the monument and the headland take centre stage. The columns of the Temple of Poseidon stand above the coast, with the Aegean around them. It suits an outing built around one destination, especially if you would rather spend time with a particular place than arrange several separate stops.
The site's official visitor information describes an intercity bus journey from Aigyptou Square at Pedion tou Areos in Athens, taking approximately two hours. The official Sounion page also sets out opening hours and closure exceptions. Pair that information with the actual return bus service for your travel date; a description of access is not a confirmed daily timetable.
If sunset is the reason for your trip, plan backwards from the journey home. Decide which service you will use after the visit and identify its departure point. The archaeological site's closing time is not the bus departure time. In winter, let the available daylight guide how many additional stops you add, rather than carrying a summer itinerary into a shorter day.
When an excursion with transport makes sense
Arranged transport can be useful if you want to agree the pickup, time at the destination and return journey in advance. Read the inclusions of the individual excursion: a meeting point near a metro station does not, by itself, mean onward transport to the activity is included.
The private Sounion excursion available through UA lists a five-hour duration and transport by private vehicle with a driver. Archaeological-site admission and a guided tour inside the temple are excluded. The programme is listed in English, with a minimum age of five. Agree the exact pickup location before booking rather than assuming every accommodation address is covered.
This option is worth considering if organising the road journey matters more to you than travelling independently, and you want a private outing. A published listing does not establish availability at the time or on the date you have in mind.
Choose the pace you actually want
- For a town walk, a market and a meal: keep your Aegina day around the main port.
- For one archaeological landmark and coastal views: choose Sounion, with a clear return plan.
- For fewer connections to organise yourself: compare a private transfer option, checking included services and separate costs.
Count the whole journey from your accommodation: getting to the departure point, waiting, the main transport leg and any onward connection. That gives you a useful comparison of the day you will actually have, rather than two headline travel times. If you decide to stay in Athens instead, our two walks through central Athens offer another way to spend a day without driving.
